What is a BIDaaS platform?

Biometric Identity as-a-Service (BIDaaS) is a cloud-based authentication model where a user’s template (voice, face or behaviour) is pseudonymised and stored in the cloud in the form of an alphanumeric construct. Any future requests to authenticate are similarly pseudonymised, and the new construct compared against the original. A real-time, risk-based assessment that the user is who they say they are is returned to you.

How is BIDaaS different from other authentication platforms?

Most of today’s biometric authentication mechanisms relate only to the user’s device. Location, permanent device identity, encrypted messaging and secure enclaves are just some of the security features of on-device biometrics, however the simple fact remains that humans are not their smartphones. Authenticating a device is not the same as authenticating an individual.

What's wrong with device-based authentication?

The fundamental flaw is this. On-device biometrics alongside location, device ID, one-time passwords or other security measures authenticate the device, not the person.

The device is given the identity, not the individual.

All that has actually happened is that multiple additional security layers have been integrated to the device, giving rise to an increasing requirement of IT professionals to manage this, whilst still lacking any genuine authentication of the individual’s identity.

There are of course other flaws:

  • An individual’s identity is not portable across channels, it is linked to a single device
  • There is no centralised identity that can be used for authentication across multiple channels; device, desktop, physical, wearables
  • There is no way of ‘backing up’ an individual’s profile, in case of device loss
  • There is no way of detecting individuals enrolling with multiple identities; a common indicator of account fraud
